The fishing vessel "Solskjær" got some serious bycatch last week, when a 6,3 meter long basking shark found its way into the net.

The basking shark feeds on plankton, and reaching lengths up to 13 meters, it is the second largest fish in the world. It has become rare the last years, and is no on the red list and protected from direct fisheries in Norway.
Lofoten Nature assisted the Marine Research Institute taking samples of the shark. These will be part of an international project mapping the stocks of basking sharks in different areas by DNA-tests.
